Description & Location
Just off the northeast side of Giftun Kebira lies Hamada. The dive sites is located just below a series of mountain cliffs on Giftun Kebira Island across from a white sandy beach. Besides being called Hamada, this dive site is also known as Stone Beach, Umm Dom and Hamada. Just under the surface a small plateau of hard coral that starts slopping at about 15 meters down to 35 meters. On the outside, where the plateau drops off is a cluster of rocky shelves. At both ends, the plateau has sheer drop offs to 50+ meters.

About the Dive
Depending on which direction the wind is coming from will determine which areas are protected. When the wind comes from the north or northeast, the east side is exposed to choppy conditions. If the wind is coming from the northwest, most of the area is protected. You will want to stay in shallow depths to enjoy the colorful and most interesting areas of this site. The drop offs are also interesting but lack the mystic found in depths of 3 - 4 meters. Near where the boats moor, look for a nice large green salad coral. Proceed north across the plateau and look for 2 large sand patches around 15 meters and 18 meters. Just after this area the drop off starts so take care.

Reef Life & Special Interests
Just above the plateau in open water you can see large schools of red fang trigger fish and blue fusiliers, snappers, unicorn fish and tuna. Common habitation on the plateau include barracuda, sharks, turtles, moray eels and scorpion fish. There have also been rare sightings of whale shark near this area.
