Description & Location
Weather permitting, it generally it takes about 90 minutes - 2 hours to reach this site from Hurghada. This is a huge horseshoe reef formation with the open side to the south. In the middle lies several small ergs lying on a shallow sandy seabed. Dives can be made here in all directions but the Gotta Shaab El Erg is the most popular area. There is a shallow channel that separates the main reef from Gotta Shaab El Erg but easy to pass through. On the west and south sides is a sandy plateau with several free standing coral blocks.

About the Dive
Getting to this area in unfavorable sea conditions can make for a rough ride until you reach the site. Once there, it is well worth it. Expect very light currents in this area, if any. Dives can be made here in all directions but the Gotta Shaab El Erg is the most popular area. This dive is great for all levels of diving experience. If the boat moors on the main reef, don't waste time in this area, head straight to the coral blocks and pinnacles. On your way back, save plenty of air to spend time at Gotta Shaab El Erg.

Reef Life & Special Interests
One of the most interesting attractions in this area are dolphins and especially in February and March, huge mantas. Near the Gotta lying on the seabed look for snowflake moray eels, blue spotted stingrays, scorpion fish, painted triggerfish and leopard groupers. Also white tip sharks have been spotted hiding under nearby table corals. Look for emperor fish, bream, snapper, and unicorn fish near the shallow reef.
