Description & Location This reef is an egg-shaped shaped reef surrounded by a white sandy seabed averaging in depths between 12 – 15 meters. Just past the reef on the west, are two large ergs. On the east side is a coral garden and three pinnacles. On calm days, it generally takes just over an hour to reach this site. Similar to Erg Abu Ramada, Gotta Abu Ramada is also known as 'The Aquarium'. About the Dive Generally this area is calm and quiet. Even in the worse case, the most you are likely to encounter is a gentle swell circling around the east and west corners of the reef. The current actually splits on the northern reef and can only be felt near the ends of the reef-these currents generally pose no problems for divers. With a name like “The Aquarium”, one can naturally assume this is another excellent site for photographers, this is so true, especially on the east side of the reef near the coral garden. There are a large variety of fish schools swarming around in beautiful soft corals. Go out about 15 – 20 meters southeast from the reef and look for 3 small pinnacles. These ergs have large colonies of fish. Another alternative for a dive is on the west side of the reef. Go out about 20 meters west from the reef until you find 2 large ergs. You will see a fantastic collection of gorgonians, soft corals and thousands of tiny colorful reef fish. Reef Life & Special Interests Marine life is extensive in all areas of this reef but the west side seems to have the largest concentration and variety. You can see banner fish, blue cheek butterflies, masked butterflies, sweet lips, goatfish, yellowish and yellow snapper. Bigger species include turtles, crocodile fish, moray eels, jacks, eagle rays and on occasion, leopard sharks pass through. Especially in September, watch carefully for titan triggerfish guarding their nests, they are easily disturbed by unwary divers.
