Description & Location Weather permitting, it takes a little more than an hour to reach this site. Erg Somaya is situated on the east side of Giftun Soraya. The tower of the Giftun police station is on the south and a ridge of maintains lies to the north. The east side of the reef slopes steeply down to depths between 15 -24 meters to a sandy seabed than drops off to over 50 meters. Two pinnacles are situated on the ledge, one at 10 meters where a mooring buoy is attached and one around 18 meters. Another pyramid shaped pinnacle lies to the north between 12 - 20 meters. It has an overhang with beautiful soft purple corals. Under the ledge between the two ergs are two caves at 25 - 32 meters that form a chimney. When the weather is rough, it is difficult to moor in this area. Expect very strong currents in this area most of the time. When possible, a drift dive is the best way to enjoy this dive. About the Dive When the weather is unfavorable, it is difficult to moor in this area. Expect very strong currents in this area most of the time. When possible, a drift dive is the best way to enjoy this dive. When planning a drift dive, you have two points in which to start from, entry to the north of the mooring point and drift along the reef until you arrive back at the mooring point. The other dive starts at the mooring point at Erg Somaya and connects to the Giftun Soraya drift dive. Drift southward until you reach the plateau of the Giftun Soraya. End this dive the same way you would with the Giftun drift. Either dive you choose, take in a visit to the caves. It is possible to go through this cave but it is not recommended for novice divers. During the dive take time along the drop off to enjoy the beautiful gorgonians and soft colorful corals. Reef Life & Special Interests Area marine life include jackfish, barracuda, napoleons, moray eels, batfish, groupers and turtles. Occasionally along the drop off white tip sharks pass by. Another special interest is seeing Spanish dancers on daily dives. Inside the caves look for lionfish feeding on glassfish and red mouth groupers.
