Description & Location
There are more than one dive sites near the Small Giftun Island however, a drift dive along the eastern side is the most popular. It's hard not to enjoy this dive no matter how many times you visit. Drifting along the eastern wall, you may encounter large marine life, if not, the giant fan coral forest is well worth seeing. Extending over the gorgonian filled wall merges an extensive plateau and drop off. It has been said that beneath the plateau the wall does not have a bottom.

About the Dive
If weather conditions are not favorable, getting to the drop off point for the drift dive can be very chopping. The current runs from the north toward the south however, the strength of the currents are often unpredictable and can change rapidly. If you are a novice diver, making the drift dive is not recommended. Plan to make your dive on the southern end of the island. Stay near the reef and go in either direction.

If you are planning to make the drift dive plan your maximum depths according to how good you are on air. If the currents are light, it will be a long dive so you don't want to go too deep. After you enter the water, get a visual on the reef as soon as possible and keep your right shoulder toward the reef. As you drift along the plateau, take care not to go too far from the edge because you can easily loose the reef and have to make a very long surface swim back to the pick up point. There are caves around 35 meters and a tunnel around 45 meters.

Reef Life & Special Interests
Toward the southern tip of the reef where the plateau tapers off you will start to see a lot more marine life including large napoleons and moray eels. You may encounter turtles, crocodile fish, blue spotted rays, painted triggerfish and clownfish. In the early morning there is a good chance to see sharks passing by near the drop off.
